What is Food Court Design?

Food Court Design:

When we look at the history of food courts, it is not possible to state a specific date for the first food court. But perhaps it can be said that the first food court design was opened in 1974 in the United States, at the Paramus Park Shopping Center in New Jersey. Of course, before that, an unsuccessful attempt had been made in 1971. However, the New Jersey food court design was the first successful experience of these cafes, which included a number of restaurants and coffee shops with different and diverse foods, gathered in the form of a complex. Food court means a food and beverage complex, and that is why it was named this way. A number of restaurants and coffee shops are located in a complex with a common hall. And it is also called a food court or food hall FOOD HALL. The purpose of creating this food court was to provide food services to people who came to shop. So that these people could eat a quick and small meal there and continue their shopping. The FOOD COURT food court design was very successful for the first time, and this spark caused food court design to be one of the main pillars of large commercial complexes in many countries. In addition to the food court design area, Persa Design and Construction has also provided the conditions for setting up catering for you, the lovers.

Food Court Design Definition

The word food court design consists of two words (Food) and (Court), which mean food and courtyard or area. In simple terms, a food court is a place to provide food services and services where people are entertained.
In this article, Persa Design and Construction intends to familiarize you with food court design.

Reasons for creating food court design

Food court design: shopping malls and large commercial complexes are always the busiest and busiest indoor spaces in urban areas. Customers and people inside these centers, in addition to buying their necessities, usually look at it as entertainment or a hobby, which the presence of a restaurant or dining area complements this entertainment. In addition, people who came just to shop can eat a small and varied meal on the go and continue their shopping.
The main reason for designing a food court is to provide a place to meet a wide range of tastes of people while shopping or walking around in a short and quick manner, and it increases the durability and prolongs the time of presence of customers in that shopping center. Hence, the average sales of commercial units increase.

Benefits of Food Court Design

Food Court Design: In restaurants or eating places such as food courts, the audience shows different eating habits according to their culture and country. In Iran, the culture of dividing and sharing various foods at one table is usually very common. The variety of food and numerous stalls in food courts is very popular according to the mentioned food culture and responds to different tastes. Different tastes and ranges of people, for example, vegetarians or young people along with the elderly, all audiences can be served in this space, which is seen in few restaurants or coffee shops with such a variety of menus. In addition, because the food is self-service, the price of the food will actually be more economical and the experience of eating in a large common hall where different people are present has its own experience.

Disadvantages of food court design

Food court design:
The above paragraph mentioned the culture of sharing food in Iran, which was one of the main advantages of food courts to respond to this desire for food diversity. However, in some cases, this diversity itself can create problems for food court design. For example, imagine that there are several types of food from different stalls on your table, and the food from one stall is not of good quality and does not satisfy you as an audience, while the service from the other stalls is of good quality. At this stage, as an audience, you do not see the problem in one stall and consider the entire complex as an inappropriate food court.
Even despite the excellent quality of the other stalls, you may never visit the food court in question again. Food courts are generally spaces with an economical and affordable menu that offer a variety of food services, usually for a small meal. In food court design, the definition of special services (such as VIP, CIP) and special services have no place in this place, and if someone is planning a ceremony, birthday or gathering, food courts are not a suitable place for it.
The crowding and large number of people in shopping malls and consequently in their food courts can be unpleasant for some people.

One of the most popular businesses, especially in developing countries, is the franchise industry.

Food court design issues:

When a food court project is defined and created; there are issues that must be planned by the design and consulting team, the most important of which include the following:

1. Determining the location and space in food court design:
The location of this space can be as part of a commercial complex, a shopping mall, or as an independent indoor space.

(For example, the wooden food court in the Ab and Atash Park, similar cases)

2. Audience in food court design:
In order to provide better service and benefit from the complex, we must first know the diversity of the audience so that the booths can be designed according to the food menu and number of booths.

(For example, most of the youth and friendly groups or families with children)

3. Number and type of booth menu:
In the design of food courts and booths, their menus should be created according to the audience’s range and taste; To be able to meet their tastes.
(For example, if most of the audience of this food court is young people, there will be more stalls with fast food menus, coffee shops, etc.)
The number of these stalls is determined according to technical and economic studies and specific standards so that the food court is successful in terms of economy and performance.

4. Infrastructure and logistics in food court design:
In food court design, vertical and horizontal communications, visibility, light and especially proper ventilation due to the presence of a kitchen, hall and numerous stalls, service spaces for employees as toilets and locker rooms, attention to the range of children and adolescents (for example, considering a children’s menu and a space for serving children) must be taken into account.

5. Decoration and interior design in food court design:
The type of furniture and the design of the arrangement of tables and chairs for serving food must be such that privacy is maintained. Soft music and the design of the acoustic space due to the crowd and noise caused by many people must also be considered. In food court design, the most important point is the efficiency and optimal utilization of the kitchen area, called industrial kitchen design, in which the correct selection of machine layout and observance of circulation are the most important design points.

6. Facilities in food court design:
Mechanical and electrical drawings are prepared after the architectural drawings and machinery layout; which are considered according to the type of machinery, the required facilities for it. After preparing all the drawings and purchasing industrial kitchen machinery, the implementation operation begins, and after installing and commissioning the industrial kitchen machinery, training of kitchen and hall personnel is carried out.

Types of operation in food courts
In general, there are two types of operation in food courts:
The owner (or employer) of the project registers the brand for each booth; in this case, the operator is one person and the entire food court operates under the management of a unit. The owner only manages the booths and invites reputable brands or restaurants to cooperate, which can be in the form of a percentage of sales or mortgage of food court booths, in which case the food court owner manages the operation.
